"Some Freaks of Atavism..."   (Chapter I)

Mortimer's article on atavism, which refers to the recurrence of a personal trait, either mental or physical, ties very neatly to the later tale of the history of the Baskerville curse, which is based on the cruelty of Hugo Baskerville, whose personality exhibits primitive traits rather than traits typical of the upper class.  From a literary perspective, this could be considered an element of foreshadowing.
