Browning wrote “Porphyria’s Lover” in a crisp iambic tetrameter. The four-beat meter gives the poem a jaunty, ballad-like feel. The iambs in their relentless, monotonous march give the speaker’s voice an unnatural quality to match his loose grip on reality.
