Rhyme in Self-Reliance

Self - Reliance 1
"Man is his own star; and the soul that can Render an honest and a perfect man, Commands all light, all influence, all fate; Nothing to him falls early or too late. Our acts our angels are, or good or ill, Our fatal shadows that walk by us still...."   (Self - Reliance)

Notice how each line in this stanza consists of five iambs, an unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable. This is called iambic pentameter. This poem also uses a rhyme with poetic meter. Although this type of poetry is not as widely used today, it was an extremely popular poetic form at the time of the publication of Self-Reliance in 1841.
