Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
American poet Robert Frost wrote “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening” in 1922, during the Modern period. The poem was published in 1923 in his collection New Hampshire, which won the 1924 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. In “Stopping by Woods,” a speaker traveling with his horse describes stopping next to a silent wood on a snowy evening and watching its quiet tranquility. Though he enjoys the beauty of the scene, he is forced to proceed on his long journey because of “promises to keep,” presumably social obligations that outweigh his desire to remain.
