"I have passed by the watchman on his beat..."   (Acquainted with the Night)

The “watchman on his beat” refers to a policeman patrolling his assigned neighborhood on foot. When encountering the policeman, the speaker avoids interaction, unwilling to engage in conversation about himself or why he walks alone at night. The passage illustrates his emotional isolation from human relationships and from society, a theme in the poem.
