The boy’s desire to see green eyes and his confusion at having this desire might be an allusion to the seafaring context of Homer’s Odyssey, in which the hero Odysseus (also known as Ulysses) was said to have green eyes. For the narrator, perhaps such an eye color is important to an adventurous lifestyle.
