Milton adopts a Petrarchan rhyme scheme in order to write this sonnet. The first two quatrains follow an ABBA rhyming pattern, and the sestet uses two tercets of CDE. Following the traditional form of a sonnet, the octet presents a problem that the sestet then resolves.
